The Development of the You Can Play Project in Australia tells the story of the origins of the You Can Play Project in the U.S. and how it inspired Australia to join. After watching You Can Play’s first video, “the faceoff”, Peter Downs, manager of Play By the Rules, contacted You Can Play co-founder Patrick Burke to kickstart an Australian version of the project.
The Australian You Can Play Campaign is a firm believer that “Whether a person is gay or straight shouldn’t matter in sport. Ability, attitude, and effort is what counts.” The You Can Play Forum took place on November 5th of 2014 in Australia and included athletes and coaches, both past and present, as well as a studio audience, sports administrators, and an expert panel.
Sports included in Australia’s You Can Play Campaign include Cricket, Australian rules football, Football, Rugby League, and Rugby Union.
