Sacramento State University’s Hornets join the You Can Play team in working for diversity in sports by including LGBT athletes, coaches and fans. Sacramento State’s You Can Play video supports students, athletes, and coaches who represent themselves freely, and the school works to “provide a safe space for student athletes regardless of race, religion, gender identity, or orientation.” Athletic Director Bill Macriss points out that “diversity is a strength in the Hornet family. It’s who we are.”
The Hornets video features student athletes and coaches wearing the school’s green and gold, all sharing the same message: If you can play, you can play. Members of the soccer, gymnastics, football, basketball, and softball teams are participants in the video. Sacramento State is a Division I member of the Big Sky Conference and fields 21 teams.
