“No matter who you are, you are welcome here.”
With that, the Sea-hawks of Memorial University of Newfoundland, become the first in their province to join You Can Play in welcoming all athletes regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
According to a statement from Memorial, “We are the Memorial University Sea-Hawks and we are proud to pledge our support for the You Can Play Project. We want to show our support for our teammates, coaches, fellow students and fans to let them know we have their back – gay or straight. It is about respect. We represent our university and our province of Newfoundland and Labrador and we do it with pride. We want to let all people know that they are welcome here.”
Founded in 1925, and located in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, MUN is the largest university in Atlantic Canada. The school’s varsity teams include men’s and women’s basketball, cross-country, soccer, swimming, volleyball and wrestling.
