The American Hockey League has been an early and frequent supporter of the You Can Play Project and our joint effort to promote diversity in sports.
You Can Play will be featured during broadcasts of the AHL All-Star Game from Utica, New York. It’s another piece of the AHL’s commitment to LGBT athletes coaches and fans. A commitment that has seen a number of AHL teams release their own videos. Among them: the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Charlotte Checkers, Manchester Monarchs, Portland Pirates, Rochester Americans, Toronto Marlies and the Worcester Sharks. The Sharks hosted a You Can Play night with a bobblehead honoring team alumnus Tommy Wingels, now with the San Jose Sharks. And, Wingels is just one AHL alumnus who’s playing in the NHL. Nazim Kadri (Toronto Maple Leafs) is a Marlies alumnus, and, Dustin Brown (LA Kings) is an alumnus of the Manchester Monarchs.
You Can Play is grateful to the staff, athletes, and fans of the AHL for their commitment to equality for LGBT athletes in sports.
