Seattle Reign FC has become the first professional women’s team in the United States to partner with You Can Play in fighting homophobia in sports.
Reign FC will team with You Can Play to provide fan outreach, player and staff education and media support.
“You Can Play is proud to partner with Seattle Reign FC in promoting diversity and inclusion for all athletes,” said Patrick Burke, president of the You Can Play Project. “Women’s voices are extremely important in the fight for equality in sports. Reign FC is leading the way as the first professional women’s team in the United States to show their support for our efforts and we’re very grateful.”
“I am excited that we are partnering with You Can Play and helping them take the steps that are needed to eradicate homophobia in professional sports,” said Seattle Reign FC midfielder Jess Fishlock. “It’s something I support 100% and I am honored to play for the first professional women’s team aligned with this cause.”
Reign FC began play this year as part of the new eight-team National Women’s Soccer League.
You Can Play is also partnered with the National Hockey League,Major League Soccer, the Canadian Women’s Hockey League and a number of American college leagues.
