As an organization, You Can Play is dedicated to ensuring the safety and inclusion of all athletes, coaches, and fans.
Though our initial work focused on making sports more welcoming for LGBT athletes, we are seeing an increasing need to support those who are sports fans. The locker-room may still be a difficult place for those who identify as LGBT, but for those who are sports fans, hearing racist, sexist, and/or anti-LGBT language can turn watching their favorite game into a dangerous space.
We will continue to work diligently with teams and leagues to ensure that all fans feel safe at arenas, stadiums, and other athletic venues. Moving forward, we will also continue to encourage team ownership and venue staff to address hateful language and behavior in order to promote an atmosphere of inclusion and safety for athletes, coaches, and fans.
